We know that the Bible is true because of biblical prophecy. God’s prophets (foretold) prophesied of future events that later came to occur. Many of these prophesied events occurred hundreds and even thousands of years after the event was prophesied.
In the Old Testament there are 351 prophesies written of that were fulfilled by Jesus Christ. These 351 prophesies should be enough proof for even the most stubborn skeptic to understand that the Bible is the truthful word of God. Below, I have written of one of these 351 prophesies. The one that I have written of concerns our salvation.
A Priest After the Order of Melchizedek
In Genesis 14:18-20 we are told that Melchizedek was the king of Salem and that he was the priest of the Most High God. In these verses, Melchizedek blesses Abram, later called Abraham, and proclaims the Most High God to be possessor of heaven and earth.
Genesis 14:18-20
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
In Psalm 110:4 we are told that Jesus Christ is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Psalm 110:4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
In Hebrews 6:20 we are also told that Jesus was made High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 6:20 Where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
In Hebrews 7:1-3 we read that Melchizedek was compared to Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 7:1-3
1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,”
3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
Jesus Christ became High Priest after the order of Melchizedek; therefore Christ is the High Priest for not only the Jews but for Gentiles as well, establishing Christ as the High Priest for everyone. As such, Christ is the High Priest that could and did make one pure and acceptable sacrifice before God, for the sins of the entire world.
Salem, which is mentioned in Genesis Chapter 14, also has great biblical significance, as it later became known as Jerusalem, and Jerusalem was where Christ was crucified and ascended into heaven. Jerusalem is also where Christ will establish His eternal earthly kingdom, beginning with the Millennial Kingdom. It has been told that Salem was the area where the Garden of Eden was located and also where Abraham took Isaac as a sacrifice to God.
The Bible is indeed the truthful word of God and the more that we study and learn about the Bible, the more that we will know of God and His love for us. If anyone ever questions if the Bible is true, we need only tell them of the 351 prophesies that Jesus Christ fulfilled.
